Annette’s Journey to Marsala – A Story of Family Roots in Sicily

Some journeys aren’t booked, they are felt in the heart. Annette Pugliese Hollis’s journey began with a simple question:
“Can I see where my grandparents were born?”

From that moment, a path opened—made of listening, research, encounters,
and one promise: to transform a family story into a return to its origins.

The meeting at Porta Garibaldi

The encounter took place right there, in front of Porta Garibaldi—the symbol of departures and homecomings.
Annette arrived from the United States with her husband and four friends.
To welcome her: me (Giulia), Piero and Matilde—two extraordinary guides.

Piero, with the patience of someone who loves history, had already traced her family roots through archival records.
Matilde, with her gentle voice and precision, translated emotions and words, giving Annette every nuance of her journey.

As we walked through the alleys of Marsala, the sound of footsteps seemed to follow the rhythm of memory.
Voices, scents, the light—everything felt familiar, even though it was her first time there.

The taste of memories

Lunch at Ristorante Garibaldi became a moment of pause and storytelling.
Between a plate of panelle and a slice of cassata, Annette recalled how her grandparents, when she was a child, spoke to her in Sicilian dialect.
“I didn’t want to forget those words,” she told us with a smile.

Every bite was a step deeper into memory.
And in that small restaurant in the heart of town, among glasses of wine and lively voices, Sicily began to speak directly to her heart.

Between wine, stone and memory

In the afternoon, we visited the Curatolo & Arini winery.
The aroma of Marsala, the barrels, the light filtering through ancient windows.
As she listened to stories about the history of the wine, Annette imagined her grandparents—perhaps walking those same streets before leaving for America.

Then came sunset at the Genna Salt Pans: a golden mirror between sea and sky.
A perfect place to sit in silence and feel one’s roots rise to the surface.

.

The documents that make the heart race

At the agency, Piero showed her the birth and marriage records of her grandparents.
Her hands trembled. Her eyes sparkled.
Annette read the documents slowly, as if she never wanted the moment to end.

.

“It’s as if I can see them right in front of me,” she whispered, in a silence that spoke more than a thousand words

In that instant, the entire journey found its meaning.
Those archival papers were no longer just documents, but lives speaking again.

A love story born in 1949

Annette then shared a beautiful chapter from her family history.
In 1949, her mother and aunt returned to Marsala.
During that trip, her aunt met an engineer from Marsala.

It was love at first sight.
Three months later, they were married in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Petrosino.
He didn’t speak English, yet he immediately found work at Ford.
They never had children, but they lived a full and peaceful life together until last year, when he passed away.

A story that feels written by destiny.
A love born in Marsala and kept forever across the ocean.

The sunset of return

At the Genna Salt Pans, the sun sank slowly, casting a golden glow.
They toasted with a glass of Marsala.
And perhaps—while looking at the horizon—Annette could hear her grandparents’ voices in that very moment. And we knew we had witnessed something rare:
a soul finding its way home.

Behind every experience like this, there is method, safety and heart

Every detail is taken care of personally: genealogical research, selection of places, interpreters, guides, restaurants and local partners.
Support before and during the journey; professional coordination with suppliers; transparent costs and safe services.

Telling someone’s roots is a delicate task. Guiding you through it is my responsibility—
and my privilege.
